Windows 8 Tablet and its Many Implications for Microsoft
Posted on | February 7, 2012 | No Comments
The Windows 8 tablet will be considered, to some, an inevitable breaking point for Windows. This tool could either sustain Windows’ success or, by contrast, push the company down considerably in the ranks. The new tablet with the new Windows 8 operating system represents Microsoft’s attempt to compete with the iPad and the new T-Mobile 7″ Samsung tab within the burgeoning market for more portable computing solutions.
At its core, Windows 8 is simply an operating system, one that works with touch as well as a mouse and keyboard, with access to apps, the web, etc. It’s safe to say that Windows already has a huge following, and the loyal, PC traditionalists are very likely to purchase a tablet as the operating system will provide legacy support for all Windows 8 apps and accessories. A tablet could seamlessly integrate into their current technology network, and will also operate in sync with the gadgetry and technology that follows. For a windows fan, it’s a no-brainer. Additionally, Windows has the “in” with big-hitters like HP and Dell, who have already announced that they will release tablets with Windows 8.
However, there are a couple of factors that could make or break the tablet. For one, price. On average, people have said they’d be willing to shell out about $300 for a Windows tablet, considerably more than the extremely cost affective Kindle Fire. Additionally “hype factor” may play a roll in Windows tablet sales. In the first quarter of 2011, about 46% of U.S. consumers were at the edge of their seat, eagerly waiting for the release of the Windows 8 tablet. However, in the passing months, this huge percentile nearly halved to a meager 25%.
With so many factors, there’s really only one way to dictate the Windows 8 tablet’s success: wait.

Add a Sleep Timer to Windows 7 Media Center?
Posted on | November 7, 2011 | No Comments
Do you make it a habit of falling asleep at night while watching Windows Media Center? Today we are going to take a look at the MC7 Sleep Timer for Windows 7 Media Center. This simple little plugin allows you to schedule an automatic shutdown time in Media Center.
Note: At this point MC7 Sleep Timer doesn’t work with extenders. If you’re using ClamAV or Panda it may detect this plugin as a virus, we’ve tested it and this is a false positive for these two antivirus apps.
Installation and Usage
Download and install MC7 Sleep Timer. (See download below)

After the installation is finished, you will find MC7 Sleep Timer located in the Media Center Extras Library. Click on the tile to open the timer and configure your settings.

The MC7 Sleep Timer will open in full screen mode. You can choose to shutdown the PC after 30 or 60 minutes, create a custom length shutdown timer at any 5 minute interval, or select the exact time you want the PC to shutdown. After setting your PC to shutdown, you’ll get an audio confirmation.

To set a custom timer length, scroll to the “Custom timer” option and click right or left on your Media Center remote or, the right or left arrow keys, to choose how many minutes before shutdown.

To schedule a shutdown for a certain time, browse to the “Shutdown at time” button, and scroll right or left with the arrow keys on the keyboard or remote. When you’ve chosen your time, hit “Enter” on the keyboard or “OK” on the remote.

Clicking the “Monitor Off” button will turn off only the monitor and “Cancel Timer” will cancel your shutdown request.

Conclusion
If you often find yourself falling asleep every night watching Media Center and then fumbling and stumbling in the middle of the night to shutdown your computer, MC7 Sleep timer might just be a perfect addition to your Media Center setup.

Shouldn’t Windows 7 Starter Just Go Away?
Posted on | August 31, 2011 | No Comments
In typical Redmond fashion, Microsoft sought to create a Windows 7-lite to create a lower price point for PCs and install on PCs in developing countries where it could be sold cheaper.
What they came up with was “Windows 7 Starter”. I’m not sure if they ever stopped to figure out that developing countries have similar expectations for sophisticated OSs that Americans and Europeans have.
Even the next version up, Windows 7 Home is barely acceptable in emerging economies.
Back to Windows 7 Starter however. The overwhelming verdict on this OS variant is a “fail”. It contains the fewest features of all variants and is only available in a 32-bit version.
Windows Aero is not included and the desktop wallpaper and Visual Styles (Windows 7 Basic) are not user-changeable. It was reported that Microsoft originally intended to restrict the edition to running 3 simultaneous applications but this limitation was dropped.
This edition is available pre-installed on computers, especially netbooks. Samsung for example offers their N-102 netbook running Win 7 Starter.
However, the OS can only address 2GB compared to the Home Basic version’s 8GB (64-bit version), cannot use multiple monitors and lacks fast user switching, the desktop user manager, printing via the Internet, Internet connection sharing and Windows Aero in addition.
Words like “frustration”, “limited” and “an annoyance” are commonly used by Windows 7 Starter users. Until Microsoft decides to deep-six Windows 7 Starter, avoid it like the plague.
One cannot help wondering that as Microsoft laments the death of the netbook and rise of the iPad, didn’t they ever stop to ask whether Windows 7 Starter might have contributed to the netbook’s decline?
Do you have or use Windows 7 Starter? If so, what do you think of it?

How to Increase/Reduce the Font Size Text in Windows 7?
Posted on | August 15, 2011 | No Comments
This trick about how to reduce or increase (read: make it bigger or smaller) the font size text available in Windows 7 is not new. In fact, I already covered such a topic when I wrote some months ago about how to change the font size text in Windows 7. However, it doesn’t work for everybody and that’s why I decided to write another article on the same subject. There are different reasons why you might wish to change the default size of your Windows 7 fonts. You don’t see well what the operating system is trying to say to you with its thousands of warning messages, you need smaller fonts because you want to customize your computer in a new way a or you just want to change its look because you don’t share the Microsoft Team decisions to use such a tiny characters. Whatever the reason this nice tutorial will do the trick!
- Right click any empty space on your Windows 7 desktop.
- Click Personalize from the menu.
- A new window will appear on your screen.
- On the left pane, click the Display link located at the bottom of the pane itself.
- The special Font size section will appear. Now, click Medium – 125% radio button if you want to increase and make the font size bigger. If you want to reduce the size instead, click the “Smaller” radio button which should be the default setting.
- If you wish to customize your Windows fonts, on the left pane, click Set custom text size (DPI).
- A small scale will appear on the window. Such scale displays a range of Pixels Per Inch (PPI) values.
- Above the scale you should see a small drop-down menu. Click it to customize the fonts. Click OK to confirm.
- Click Log Off to let Windows OS to adjust its font size.
- Done!
